The 2024-2025 NILES WEST THEATRE Season
Three souls are locked up together for eternity. There are no windows or mirrors, the electric lights can never be turned off, and there is no exit. This torture is not of the rack and fire, but of the burning humiliation of each person as it is stripped of its pretenses by the cruel curiosity of the damned. Here they are shorn of secrecy, and even the darkest deeds are mercilessly exposed to the fierce light. It is an eternal torment. This cornerstone of existential literatur grappels with some of the biggest questions and themes that we as people face- What happens after death? What legacy do we leave behind? What are the best parts of us? And what are the worst?
Come party with us in Illyra! The Directing class will spend the semester working towards our own showcase based on the interests of the students in the class and direction that we choose to take our curriculum and learning for the semester.
Dive in with us into a magical world full of stories and characters that many of us are familiar with. As our childhood fairy tales get interwoven together with the music of Stephen Sondheim we will see that what appears to us at first glance is often just the surface, and that we never know what dangers lurk around the corner. After all, “nice is different than good”. Journey with us Into the Woods. D219 has not produced a Sondheim musical since 2006 so we are very excited to be bringing his work back into our district. James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.
The Directing class students each bring a wonderful ten minute play to our stage. Full of a vast range of genres, ideas, and concepts we will get to see our young arts take the lead on their very own production.
